Scheffler has been lost in the mighty shadow of Rory McIlroy so far this year. McIlroy has won three big tournaments in a stretch capped off by the Masters and the career Grand Slam. McIlroy said at the start of his run that he was inspired by the play of Scheffler. Now it might be Scheffler’s turn to get inspired. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Larry Miller, a two-time ACC player of the year for North Carolina and 2022 inductee in the College Basketball Hall of Fame, has died. He was 79. The UNC athletic department says Miller died Sunday in Pennsylvania. No cause of death was given. An athletic department spokesman says Miller was in hospice care and had been dealing with medical issues for some time. Miller was a star forward on coach Dean Smith’s first two ACC championship and Final Four teams in 1967 and 1968. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs has been sworn in to a new term after her Republican rival challenged the results over six months. Riggs took her oath Tuesday in Raleigh shortly after the State Board of Elections issued an election certificate to her. The board was complying with a federal judge who last week rejected Jefferson Griffin’s arguments that potentially thousands of ballots should be removed from the count. Griffin conceded rather than appeal. Riggs won by 734 votes. The race was the last undecided nationally among those called by The Associated Press in the 2024 general election.… Continue Reading
Government data shows U.S. retail egg prices have declined for the first time since October. The average price for a dozen Grade A eggs fell to $5.12 in April after reaching a record $6.23 in March, according to the Consumer Price Index released on Tuesday. The average price of eggs of all sizes fell 12.7%, which was the steepest monthly decline since March 1984. Still, U.S. egg prices remain near record highs as a persistent outbreak of bird flu continues to wipe out egg-laying hens. NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson were reinstated by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday, making both eligible for the sport’s Hall of Fame after their careers were tarnished by sports gambling scandals. Rose’s permanent ban was lifted eight months after his death and comes a day before the Cincinnati Reds will honor baseball’s career hits leader with Pete Rose Night. Manfred announced Tuesday that he was changing the league’s policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire after death. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials say they plan to phase out ingestible fluoride supplements used to strengthen children’s teeth, citing possible health risks. The announcement Tuesday is the latest action by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. against a substance that has been a mainstay of dental care for decades. The Food and Drug Administration said it will conduct a scientific review of the products by late October with the aim of removing them from the market. (AP) — Sean Walker scored late and Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net clincher to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 5-2 on Monday night for a 3-1 lead in their second-round playoff series. Walker’s score came at the 16:45 mark of the third period after the Capitals had pulled to within 3-2 on Alex Ovechkin’s one-timer on a 5-on-3 power play. Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist, while Shayne Gostisbehere and Seth Jarvis also scored. Jakob Chychrun also scored for Washington. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are leaping after China and the United States announced a 90-day truce in their trade war. The S&P 500 jumped 2.6% Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 951 points, and the Nasdaq composite gained 3.5%. Hopes for an economy less encumbered by tariffs also sent crude oil prices higher. The U.S. dollar strengthened against other currencies, and Treasury yields jumped on expectations the Federal Reserve won’t have to cut interest rates so deeply this year in order to protect the economy.
