US job openings rose in April, signaling resilience in the American labor market

US job openings rose in April, signaling resilience in the American labor market

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. job openings rose unexpectedly in April, showing that the labor market remains resilient in the face of uncertainty arising from President Donald Trump’s trade wars. The Labor Department reported Tuesday that employers posted 7.4 million job vacancies in April, up from 7.2 million in March. Economists had expected opening to drift down to 7.1 million. But the number of Americans quitting their job — a sign of confidence in their prospects — fell, and layoffs ticked higher. Openings remain high by historical standards but have dropped sharply since peaking at 12.1 million in March 2022 when the economy was still roaring back COVID-19 lockdowns.… Continue Reading

Cameron Young rallies for US Open spot on a long day of qualifying for Oakmont

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Cameron Young is among 47 players who earned a spot in the U.S. Open on a long day of qualifiers from coast to coast. Young birdied three of his last four holes to get into a five-man playoff for one spot in Ohio. He birdied the first hole to bump out Rickie Fowler and Max Homa. Homa split with his caddie and wound up going 38 holes carrying his own bag. The qualifier from Atlanta include 17-year-old high school junior Mason Howell, who went 36 holes without a bogey. Matt Vogt, who is a dentist, led the two qualifiers in Washington state.… Continue Reading

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesper Fast retires after missing season with neck injury

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesper Fast is retiring after missing this season with a neck injury sustained in the 2023-24 regular-season finale. The 33-year-old Fast announced his decision Monday. He hadn’t played since April 2024 when he was cross-checked from behind into the boards at Columbus. Fast wore a neck brace when he spoke with reporters after the playoffs that year. The team announced in August he would miss the year after having neck surgery. Fast had signed a two-year deal in July 2023.… Continue Reading

Shooting leaves 1 dead, 11 hurt on a North Carolina street during a house party

HICKORY, N.C. (AP) — Gunfire erupted around a house party in western North Carolina early Sunday and authorities say one person was killed and 11 others injured. A sheriff’s statement said some had gunshot wounds and others were hurt while running from the gunfire in a normally quiet neighborhood south of Hickory in western North Carolina. Exercise boosts survival rates in colon cancer patients, study shows

A first-of-its-kind experiment shows a three-year exercise program improved survival in colon cancer patients. The findings were featured Sunday at a cancer meeting in Chicago and published by the New England Journal of Medicine. Experts say cancer centers and insurance plans should consider making exercise coaching a new standard of care. Researchers followed 889 patients with treatable colon cancer who had completed chemotherapy. Half were given health information while the others worked with an exercise coach. Over time, the people in the structured exercise program had 28% fewer cancers and 37% fewer deaths from any cause.… Continue Reading

In Marseille, a shadow becomes art in Banksy’s latest street mural

In Marseille, a shadow becomes art in Banksy’s latest street mural

MARSEILLE, France (AP) — The lighthouse appeared overnight. Painted on a wall tucked away in a quiet Marseille street, its beam aligned perfectly with the real-life shadow of a metal post on the pavement. At its center, stenciled in crisp white, are the words: “I want to be what you saw in me.” Banksy had struck again. On Friday, the elusive British street artist confirmed the work by posting two images on his official Instagram account — without caption or coordinates. Fans quickly identified the location as 1 Rue Félix Frégier, in the Catalans district of Marseille’s 7th arrondissement, near the sea.… Continue Reading

FDA approves Moderna’s new lower-dose COVID-19 vaccine

The Food and Drug administration has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine made by Moderna but with limits on who can use it. Moderna’s new option is a lower-dose version that is a step toward next-generation coronavirus vaccines. The company said in a statement Saturday that it expects to offer both the new vaccine and its existing COVID-19 shot this fall. The FDA approved the new vaccine for all adults 65 and older, and for people age 12 to 64 who are at higher risk from the coronavirus. That’s the same limit that the FDA set in licensing another vaccine option from Novavax.… Continue Reading
