Supreme Court rejects call to overturn its decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide

Supreme Court rejects call to overturn its decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has rejected a call to overturn its landmark decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. The justices on Monday turned away an appeal from a former Kentucky court clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling. Clerk Kim Davis had been trying to get the justices to overturn a lower-court order that she pay $360,000 in damages and attorney’s fees. Justice Clarence Thomas has urged his colleagues to overturn the Supreme Court’s marriage decision, much as they did in 2022 when the high court overturned the right to abortion.… Continue Reading

Trump plans to federalize 300 troops in Illinois, as judge blocks a similar mobilization in Oregon

Trump plans to federalize 300 troops in Illinois, as judge blocks a similar mobilization in Oregon

President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 Illinois National Guard troops to protect federal officers and assets in Chicago. It is the latest escalation of his use of federal intervention in cities. But the same day, a similar mobilization of 200 guard troops in Oregon was temporarily blocked after a federal judge found the president was likely overstepping his legal authority in responding to relatively small protests in Portland. The president has called the deployments in cities necessary and attacked Democrats on crime and immigration. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek says the deployment is an abuse of power. And Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker calls the administration’s demands un-American.… Continue Reading

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a global market meltdown, President Donald Trump on Wednesday abruptly backed down on his tariffs on most nations for 90 days, but raised his tax rate on Chinese imports to 125%.It was seemingly an attempt to narrow what had been an unprecedented trade war between the U.S. and most of the world to one between the U.S. and China.Global markets surged on the development, but the precise details of Trump’s plans to ease tariffs on non-China trade partners were not immediately clear.… Continue Reading

Shingles is awful, but there may be another reason to get vaccinated. It may fight dementia

Shingles is awful, but there may be another reason to get vaccinated. It may fight dementia

WASHINGTON (AP) — A vaccination to prevent horribly painful shingles may offer an extra benefit: New research suggests it might lower the risk of dementia, too. There have long been hints that certain viruses increase risk for later-in-life dementia, including the virus that causes chickenpox. That virus never leaves the body, hiding in nerves to erupt later when the immune system wanes from illness or age — what’s called shingles. The new study tracked seniors in Wales and found shingles vaccination cut their risk of developing dementia over the next seven years by 20%. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.… Continue Reading

House GOP campaign chairman says voters will ‘reward us’ for the Trump-Musk DOGE cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Republican campaign committee is already predicting his party will pick up seats in the midterm election that are some 20 months away. Republican Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina also says in an Associated Press interview that the Department of Government Efficiency’s cuts are resonating with voters. Hudson and House Speaker Mike Johnson have told fellow Republicans to skip hosting town hall meetings because the gatherings are being disrupted by protesters angry over the cuts. But Hudson says Republicans are confident their budget-cutting puts them “on the side of the angels.” Democrats believe they have a chance to win back the House majority in 2026.… Continue Reading
