BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are playing the first MLB regular season game ever in the state of Tennessee after a rain delay before the first pitch. They are wrapping up a three-game series Saturday night at the MLB Speedway Classic on the diamond constructed on the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway. This racetrack is called “The Last Great Colosseum.” Organizers threw a big party mixing NASCAR themes with baseball with star Tim McGraw performing. Cameron Young builds 5-shot lead at Wyndham Championship in search of first win

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is one round away from finally being a PGA Tour winner. He ran off four straight birdies in the Wyndham Championship and stretched his lead to eight shots at one point. Young made a pair of late birdies for a 65. That gives him a five-shot lead over Nico Echavarria. No one else is closer than eight shots. Young is widely considered the best player without a victory on a main tour. His bigger goal is trying to make the Ryder Cup. He grew up in New York and won a New York State Open at Bethpage Black.… Continue Reading

Coaches race to master art of retention amid NIL, revenue sharing and transfer portal challenges

College coaches are racing to master retention as revenue sharing and NIL opportunities steer athletes toward the transfer portal. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman, who lost most of his 2023 recruits, says the transfer rate isn’t about treatment or development but possibly playing time or finances. At SEC Media Days, he emphasized loyalty, with players like Cam Ball staying committed. Florida coach Billy Napier highlights the importance of pitching the right message during recruiting. Coaches like SMU’s Rhett Lashlee and NC State’s Dave Doeren stress rewarding loyalty over enticing new players with higher offers.… Continue Reading

The Wyndham Championship closes out the PGA Tour’s regular season. It’s the last chance for players to get into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup and advance to the postseason. And it’s a reminder that golf doesn’t offer guarantees. Max Homa, Sahith Theegala and Adam Scott played in the Presidents Cup. All three are among those outside the top 70 going into the Wyndham Championship. LIV Golf is going to South Africa next year. Football season looms with no clear guidance in athlete battles to win more eligibility from NCAA

Football season looms with no clear guidance in athlete battles to win more eligibility from NCAA

The wave of lawsuits from college athletes seeking another season of eligibility seems to be slowing down. With fall football practice starting this week, players hoping for a judge’s approval to play may be left waiting. Legal expert Sam Ehrlich says it’s likely too late for athletes to file cases and get relief. Judges have provided inconsistent rulings, and the issue might end up in a higher court. Some athletes, like Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, have won their cases. Others remain in limbo. The NCAA wants limited liability protection from Congress to address these eligibility lawsuits.… Continue Reading
