RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a long road trip with concerns about the status of defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He missed a large portion of the third period and all of overtime in Saturday night’s 4-3 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said the team will know more about his status on Monday. Slavin logged less than 4 1/2 minutes of ice time following the second period Saturday night. Jarvis scores winner late in OT as Hurricanes top Flyers 4-3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored with 16.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jarvis also scored the go-ahead goal in Carolina’s season-opening win over New Jersey. Jarvis, who has three goals this season, is building off his 2024-25 season when he was the team’s leading goal scorer. Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes. Frederik Andersen made 20 saves. Bobby Brink had a goal and an assist and Owen Tippett and Travis Sanheim also scored for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson stopped 35 shots.… Continue Reading

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — C.J. Carr passed for 342 yards and two touchdowns and No. 16 Notre Dame pulled away from N.C. State in the second half for a 36-7 victory. Carr connected on 19 of 31 passes, including TD tosses of 18 yards to K.K. Smith and 12 yards to Will Pauling in the third quarter. Jeremiyah Love rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns for Notre Dame (4-2), which has won four in a row. The Fighting Irish outscored the Wolfpack 26-0 in the second half. C.J. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle has sent a strong message to his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, after rushing for a career-best 206 yards against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Dowdle, who spent five seasons with the Cowboys, said the upcoming game will be very physical and warned the Cowboys that they better buckle up. The Cowboys, who have the 32nd-ranked defense, insist they’ll be prepared. Dowdle’s performance came as he filled in for the injured Chuba Hubbard. Bill Belichick’s first season at North Carolina has run into problems both on and off the field. The Tar Heels are 2-3 but have lost in lopsided fashion in all three of their games against power-conference opponents. A person with knowledge of the situation said the school has also suspended an assistant coach while it looks into potential NCAA rules violations tied to improper benefits. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school hasn’t publicly discussed the suspension. The ACC has been going through a sideline overhaul. This year that includes 4 new head coaches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference’s multiyear coaching overhaul will include four new head coaches for the 2025-26 season. Those are Florida State’s Luke Loucks, Miami’s Jai Lucas, N.C. State’s Will Wade and Virginia’s Ryan Odom. The league has seen 14 of its 18 programs change coaches at least once going back to the 2020-21 season. Those losses include retiring Hall of Famers in North Carolina’s Roy Williams, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. Loucks said during the ACC’s preseason media days that there’s “a new wave of youthfulness” among the new coaches coming into the league.… Continue Reading

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has a new job: chief basketball officer for his former Duke program

Duke is getting help from former Blue Devils player and Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum. The school announced Tuesday that the six-time NBA all-star would serve in a volunteer advisory role for the program as “chief basketball officer.” Tatum is currently recovering from a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon suffered in May during the NBA playoffs. In its release, the school said Tatum’s tasks will include having in-person visits with the team to discuss development, professionalism and team culture. CHARLOTTE,. N.C. (AP) — Rico Dowdle made an impressive debut as a starter for the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 206 yards against the Miami Dolphins. He predicted to teammates last week that he’d run for 180 yards, but exceeded his own expectations. Dowdle’s performance included runs of 53 and 43 yards, nearly breaking the franchise’s single-game rushing record. Despite early turnovers, the Panthers stuck with the run game and rallied for a 27-24 win. Dowdle even suggested a key play that set up a field goal. With Chuba Hubbard’s status uncertain, Dowdle’s role looks set to expand. He faces his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, next Sunday.… Continue Reading

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Joey Logano has secured the final spot in the next round of the NASCAR playoffs after a dramatic race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On Sunday, Logano battled Ross Chastain for the last transfer position, with the two swapping spots multiple times. Denny Hamlin played a key role in the outcome when he made contact with Chastain, causing him to spin and finish behind Logano. This allowed Logano to advance and eliminated Chastain.
