Presented by North Carolina Opera featuring Fidelio! On Sunday, November 14, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Meymandi Concert Hall, Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts FIDELIO is generously sponsored by Ross Lampe, Jr. FIDELIO is Beethoven’s only opera, based on a true story from the French Revolution about a woman who, disguised as a man, freed her husband from prison. The original version of the opera received its premiere in 1805 in Vienna, but thanks to Napoleonic invasion and French occupation, it attracted little notice at first. Beethoven took the opportunity to rewrite the piece – including several versions of the overture – and it was successful in its final version in 1814. The inspired music, the vigor and excitement of the rescue scene, the great chorus, the beauty of the Act I quartet (that has the same feel of a slow movement from one of Beethoven’s symphonies) won over the Viennese public and subsequent audiences. At the same time, the opera’s message of hope, and of liberation from tyranny has made the piece resonate with audiences around the world even beyond its musical impact. Arthur Fagen conducts the NCO Orchestra and Chorus. Alexandra LoBianco (previously seen here in Tosca and Siegfried) sings Leonore, and Carl Tanner (previously seen here in Pagliacci and Samson et Dalila) sings Florestan. Other returning artists include Kenneth Kellogg as Rocco and Takaoki Onishi as Don Fernando.

FIDELIO lasts approximately 2h30m, including one intermission. Sung in German with English supertitles Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven Librettist: Joseph Sonnleithner Premiere: 1814, Theater am Kärntnertor, Vienna, Austria

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet Boston Cream Pie!

If you’re on a diet and avoiding extra calories, there’s another way to enjoy a sweet treat besides eating a slice of pie: adopt Boston Cream Pie! In fact, this 9-year-old black cat will even diet WITH you, as she is on a weight loss journey of her own after coming to Second Chance at a hefty 17.5 pounds. Having been rescued from a county shelter, where her former owner brought her when they moved away, Boston Cream Pie is a mellow girl looking for a calm home to call her own, for good this time. Could it be with you? Visit her at Second Chance Pet Adoptions or learn more about her and apply to adopt through our website, www.SecondChanceNC.org.

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet Merlot!

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet Merlot!

If your perfect Friday night involves a little wine down, consider adoptable Merlot! This dark border collie/cattle dog blend is versatile, pairing well with other canines, calm felines, older children, and any meal or treat. As a 2014 vintage, she has experienced some loss of pigmentation as is common with this varietal, but she remains an easy-to-drink in gal you’ll fall in love with. Welded into her outdoor cage by her former owner, Merlot is complex and layered, but with time, she turns mellow and smooth. She is full-bodied, so caloric indulgence should be in moderation (for her). Not available to customers at adoption center on a walk-in basis, but can be delivered free to adoption center for online orders (i.e., adoption applications to initiate a meeting with Merlot and foster mom), which can be submitted at www.SecondChanceNC.org.

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet Tiva!

Looking for a pint-sized pup? Look no further than Tiny Tiva! This 35-pound girl’s sweet “sit” is just one well-trained behavior—after she found herself running as a stray in July, Second Chance rescued her from a county shelter and gave this girl some good training for good manners. At 5 years old, Tiva is still plenty playful—she excels at fetch and requests her toy box be kept full—but she also loves couch cuddles when it’s time to chill out. Tiva is outgoing and curious so she loves exploring new environments, which she’d love to do with another dog or older kids if you’ve got them. If Tiva might be a good fit for your household, learn more about her and apply to adopt at www.SecondChanceNC.org.

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet King Roger!

King Roger is a 3 year old tabby boy whose love is as big as his body! He is a staff and volunteer favorite, as he loves to climb in your arms and snuggle up with a hug. He can be a bit chirpy when he’s hungry but mostly likes to hang out and relax wherever his people are. He is not great with cats or dogs, so he would do best as the only apple of your eye. We can’t believe he hasn’t been scooped up yet, and hope he can find his fur-ever home soon. If you would like to meet King Roger, visit Second Chance Pet Adoptions Monday-Friday 11am-5pm or submit an adoption application at SecondChanceNC.org!

KIX Kitties and K9s: Meet Izzy!

Izzy is an adventurous and energetic dog who loves to scale fences! This clever pup is always up for a challenge, and isn’t afraid to climb over any obstacle in her way. Despite her love for excitement, Izzy is a sweet and loving dog who craves affection and attention from her human companions. She is highly trainable and eager to please, making her a perfect candidate for a variety of activities, from agility to obedience training. Izzy gets along well with other dogs and would do best in a household with a tall securely fenced yard, where she can safely explore and play. She would also thrive in an active household where she can get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. If you think Izzy could be the girl for you, submit an adoption application at www.SecondChanceNC.org!
