Visionary filmmaker and one-of-a-kind personality JOHN WATERS (Cry Baby, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Female Trouble, and Hairspray) is bringing his hit show John Waters: This Filthy World: Dirtier and Filthier to Durham’s Carolina Theatre. Waters takes on taboo topics as only he can do in this hilarious and completely uncensored one-man show. Waters, who has been dubbed “the Pope of Trash” and branded “O for Offensive” by the Catholic Church, earned his bad reputation by turning bad taste into high art. Part confession, part Vaudeville act, he’ll share with a live theater audience his origins in the trash genre and his subsequent adventures.
About John Waters: Born in Baltimore to an upper-middle-class family, many of John Waters’ films satirize suburban America, social conventions and attitudes. He began making short underground films in the 1960s with an 8mm camera received as a birthday present from his grandmother. Waters dubbed his assembled troupe of characters and crew – that included friends, schoolmates and other misfits – Dreamland Studios. Under Waters’ guiding hand and the make-up genius of Van Smith, one of the Dreamlanders, Harris Glenn Milstead, became DIVINE, the international drag superstar. In the 16 films Waters has written and directed, he has worked with such pop-culture icons as Johnny Depp, Deborah Harry, Ricki Lake, Kathleen Turner, Traci Lords, Patricia Hearst, Iggy Pop and Troy Donahue.
